Ski touring in Crete – Greece

Lefka Ori mountain range – a sea of summits

Crete is the southernmost Greek island, and a popular summer destination. Did you know the island also offers skiing?

Well Crete as most of Greece is really mountainous, and its character is defined by a high mountain range stretching from west to east. It includes Crete’s highest point, Mount Ida (Psiloritis, 2456m). The mountain range of the Lefka Ori (White Mountains) with 50 summits above 2000 meters in altitude. The mountain range of Dikti with an altitude of 2148 meters. Further to the east are the mountains of Thripti, with an altitude of 1476 meters.

The island does not have a ski resort. Skiing is only possible by going up the mountains on your own and earning your turns!

Ski season usually lasts from mid-February to late March and depending on the weather until mid-April. It would be more accurate to describe the snow conditions as spring snow. While the slopes are relatively avalanche-safe, one should always carry all the necessary equipment and be cautious. North faces are often frozen and dangerous, so boot crampons are a must.

Considering Crete’s geographical location, skiing can be surprisingly good. While it may sound impossible to ski so far south, there is plenty of snow and access to the mountains is easy in most cases.

If, however, you decide to visit Crete on a ski touring trip, you will be able to experience more of what the island has to offer. You may combine it with the island’s natural beauty, culture, history, and cuisine.
